HINTS & TIPS

Lawn pre-season treatment

To get your lawn off to a great start this season, it is recommended having the lawn scarified.

By scarifying the lawn, it gets rid of all the old dead growth, weeds and moss that has grown during the winter and it aerates the lawn.

Dependant on the size of area, this service ranges from £5.00 per lawn.

We also offer a lawn weed treatment service that is a once-off treatment and will last the whole season. Prices range from £5.00 per container covering an area of 30m².

Cats
Stop cats using your flower beds as a toilet - spray tea bags (either new or used) with Ralgex (Deep Heat). Bury the teabags just below the surface of the soil - when the cat disturbs them they will give off the scent of the spray - which cats can not stand. In time the tea bags will break down and nourish the soil.

Cut flowers
If tulips droop (due to bubbles inside the stem) prick the stem with a pin, just below the flower. They will straighten up within a few hours.
Feeding roses
Use banana skins as mulch around roses - they feed on the potassium released.

Slugs & Snails

Hostas often get eaten when they first start to grow in spring. Slugs and snails lay their eggs around such lush plants in the autumn - knowing that their offspring will have a good meal ready once hatched. As soon as hosta begin to grow remove the top soil from around it - it will be full of eggs. Replace with fresh soil.

Ants

Ants can be a real nuisance to get rid of in the garden, particularly if they choose to build their nests under a plant or in a container. The continuous tunnelling loosens the soil exposing the roots to the air causing the plant to wilt or die.

Ants detest the smell of Eucalyptus oil, so make up a solution using 20 drops of essential oil to every 2 litres of water. Pour or spray over the nest and the ants will soon flee!

Space

If your garden space is tiny try a colour scheme of all white flowers and green leaves and shrubbery to make it look larger. If you want a colour accent try a few pots of Tulips and Geraniums.

Curving paths always make a garden look bigger. So will a pool set against a back wall. The pool does not have to be large.

Garden beds can be edged with gray cinder blocks or outlined with bricks for unusual effects.
